Growing a Healthier You
June 2013
June – 2013 celebrates 100 years of 4-H in Canada.
The first club
was formed in rural Manitoba in Roland and they were called Boys and Girls Clubs
until 1952 when they adopted the name 4-H
I pledge
- My HEAD to clearer thinking,
- My HEART to greater loyalty
- My HANDS to larger service
- My HEALTH to better living
For my club, my community and my country.
The words of this pledge mirror the essence of the words of the Mary Stewart
Collect that we as WI members say. 4-H and WI are very important rural
organizations that can help us Grow a Healthier You.

Take 10

Growing a Healthier You
May 2013
May – in Canada we observe Mental Health week and Canada Health Day May 12.
One Australian Mental Health Association slogan was Celebrate Connect Grow. What better words to grow a healthier you. Hope for ourselves and others as we grow and connect. Anyone who plants in the soil, be it a farmer or a gardener, is filled with a sense of renewal and optimism that all will be well and the crops will be successful. What will you focus on this month to ‘Grow a Healthier you’?
 |
Take 10
- Take time for yourself every day. Even 10 minutes just for you!
- Bring a non-member friend to your Women’s Institute meeting
- Spend time with your mother or if your mother is deceased share a favourite memory of her with someone
- Be a ‘mum’ to someone in your community whose mother is not in the area or has passed away.
- Celebrate a special event in your life
- Plan a fun day for your family – maybe a special meal or a short trip in your local area

TOAST TO FARM WOMEN 2012
She is amazing.
She is one of a kind.
She is curious.
She is on the move – grain hauler, kid taker and parts picker upper.
She is a 4-H Leader.
She is a volunteer.
She is a super hero – able to leap fences, cow pies, and children’s toys in a single bound.
She is a bookkeeper, organizer, delegator and coach.
She can teach by her wisdom and lead by her grace.
She is a warrior.
She is a goddess.
She is ravishing – in her barn boots, her garden hat, and her apron.
She is charming.
She can weather anything – sunshine, snowflakes, and sparkling rain.
She is ingenious.
She is a wife, mother, a chauffeur, a domestic engineer, a chef, a gardener, a gate minder and a partner.
She is everything in between.
She is inspiration.
She is strength.
She is amazing.
She is You!

Growing a Healthier You
March 2013
March is nutrition month in Canada. By eating well, you can grow a healthier you. ‘Comfort foods’, the favourite foods your mother made for you when you were sick or when the family got together hold a special place in our lives. Eating is a social activity that helps to bring people together. We feel good, we eat well and we have fun together. The Dieticians of Canada have a great website with lots of great ideas to help us eat right, your way, everyday. The 2013 slogan is Best Food Forward: Plan Shop Cook Enjoy!
 |
Take 10
- Eat a new ‘green vegetable’ on March 17
- Try a new vegetable recipe
- Spend time reading seed catalogues to find a new vegetable/fruit you might plant in your garden

- Consider the hungry in your area – can you volunteer at a local food bank or make a donation
- Shop locally for all the food that you can
- Bake with your children/grandchildren

Growing a Healthier You
February 2013
Importance of Connecting – It is about connecting with others. Social connections and positive relationships are linked to our feeling of wellbeing. Throughout our lives our relationships with others change but always remain important to us. We are social beings and being with people gives us the opportunity to share our experiences and learn about others experiences. Good relationships with your family, your friends old and new help us to have fun and enjoy life. Feeling good about yourself helps you to have fun and enjoy life, too.
