Do you have a bucket list? Is there something you would really like to do but have not had an opportunity to do so? Recently, a Nova Scotia Women’s Institute member took something off her bucket list and had a lifelong dream fulfilled.
A long-time member of the Fox Brook WI Branch in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Etta wanted to do something special to mark her 90th birthday.
And what did she do? Etta went sky diving.
Her dream became a reality when her name was submitted to the not-for-profit organization “We Are Young”, which grants wishes to elders. The organization said this was one of the riskier wishes they granted but the smiles on Etta’s face more than made up for any concerns anyone may have had.
Taking a page from Etta’s book, what is on the bucket list for the Women's Institute?
What opportunities could there be if we opened our minds to new possibilities? Etta shows it is not about our age but more about our willingness to try new ideas.
Though COVID-19 continues to impact our lives, the role WI plays in our society has not changed but, like the harness Etta wore when she skydived, we may need to adjust the straps and rethink how that role is fulfilled. Let’s challenge our members and branches to adjust their straps and, like Etta, take that leap.
